This sextant has a 6x30 monocular with super-clean optics and smooth focus, traditional split horizon mirror, a very strong frame, 4 index and 3 horizon shades, and a smooth micrometer, without vernier. The parts are painted a semi-flat black. The paint looks faded, but there is very little worn off. It is in better condition on the frame; on the mirror frames and filter frames the paint is in fair to poor condition. The arc is polished, with black markings, and the micrometer drum is white plastic with black markings. Fastener heads show only the earliest signs of tarnishing or surface corrosion. The grip is the type with the hollow back, to allow a leaf spring inside the box to press up against it and keep the locking gate from wanting to move.
The box is the original solid mahogany model, with finger-jointed edges. Its condition is good, and a light sanding and oiling or varnishing would make it look very good indeed. The box hardware is all good. The lock, like so many we see, has no key. A socket wrench for mirror adjusting is included. A C. Plath medallion graces the underside of the hinged lid.
